Marvel Comics says Spider-Man’s alter ego Peter Parker will meet his counterpart in the Ultimate Comics universe, Miles Morales, in a June crossover. The death of the Ultimate Comics Peter Parker was Marvel’s best-selling comic of 2011; Morales replaced Peter Parker as Spider-Man in the Ultimate Comics line shortly after.

The Ultimates imprint is separate from Marvel’s bigger universe; the original Marvel Universe Peter Parker continues his adventures in “The Amazing Spider- Man,” published twice a month. “Ultimate Spider- Man” debuted in 2000 and is among Marvel Comics’ best-selling trade paperback collections. “The idea is to create a small Marvel universe,” writer Brian Michael Bendis said in a 2001 interview with The Oklahoman. “If you present an honest portrayal of teenage characters, (teenagers) will want to read it.” Peter Parker will meet Miles Morales in the upcoming series “Spider-Men,” coming from Marvel in June.

Marvel Comics is positioning Spider-Men - the upcoming main Marvel Universe/Ultimate Comics Universe mash-up pairing Peter Parker with Miles Morales - as one of their highest profile projects of the summer, so much so they've gotten out in front and offered Newsarama readers an exclusive first look at September's variant cover of issue #5 by artist Travis Charest.

50 years ago a heroic legacy was born out of a horrible tragedy when super-powered teenager Peter Parker lost his beloved Uncle Ben and learned that with great power must come great responsibility. That event happened in Marvel Comics' "Amazing Fantasy" #15 by the legendary creative team of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko and it transformed Peter Parker and his alter ego, the Amazing Spider-Man into Marvel's flagship hero.

12 years ago Marvel decided to look at how that tragic heroic legacy would play out if it was restarted in a different, contemporary universe. In "Ultimate Spider-Man" #1 writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Mark Bagley introduced readers to a new, youthful Peter Parker whose adventures took place in a different "Ultimate" Marvel Universe. The Peter Parker of the Ultimate Universe was both similar to and distinctly different from his Marvel Universe counterpart. One of the ways in which he differed was that his fate became much more tragic -- the Peter of the Ultimate Universe did not survive to see adulthood. He recently perished fighting to save his beloved Aunt May from an assault by his deadliest enemies.

The Ultimate Universe wasn't left without a Spider-Man though. Middle schooler Miles Morales had been given spider-powers in an accident similar to the one that transformed Peter Parker, and Peter's death inspired him to take up the mantle of the fallen hero in last September's "Ultimate Comics Spider-Man" #1. This June, Miles Morales' creators, Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli, will introduce him to the Spider-Man of the Marvel Universe when they kick off the five-issue "Spider-Men" miniseries. CBR News spoke with Pichelli about her work on the series.

Well, probably not, but Jim Cheung's cover for Spider-Men #4 features a beaten down Miles Morales in the arms of Peter Parker! Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso also comments on the ramifications of the series and the choice of Mysterio as villain.

"There's no point in doing a story of this scope if nothing comes of it," teases Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso in an interview with Newsarama. "Epic stories almost always do something to change the characters or the universe of the characters. You can assume this story will have ramifications, for either or both of the characters. Will we revisit that line between the Ultimate Universe and the Marvel Universe? There might be clues in the story." Pretty intriguing, eh?
