Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #23 - People who’ve worn the webbed mask have abandoned being Spider-Man before. The cover of this week’s Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #23 riffs on the classic John Romita image from Amazing Spider-Man #50, when Peter Parker quit. And I want to say that Ben Riley stopped web-swinging because of angst, too. But I could be wrong about that.

weber_dubois22Brian Michael Bendis has been the shepherd of the Ultimate Universe since the beginning, formulating the basis of the entire line with his run on Ultimate Spider-Man that began nearly 13 years ago. Not content to settle into one status quo for too long, Ultimate Peter Parker was killed off in early 2011 to make way for a replacement hero named Miles Morales, who has since continued the Ultimate tradition of keeping these stories full of surprises.

Back in February, Marvel teased "Spider-Man No More!" in May's Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #23, showing burgeoning Spidey Miles Morales dolefully walking away from his costume, in an homage to the cover of Amazing Spider-Man #50 by John Romita.
